Watching animations is a childhood memory for every generation (一代人), but the shows are different over time.
Some animations not only allow us to enjoy classics from different times, but also give us a taste of Chinese culture. From the story to visual effects (视觉效果), they have a real Chinese flavor.
The story The Legend of Sealed Book (《天书奇谭》) comes from Chinese legends. Yuangong, who comes from heaven (天庭), finds a book with amazing tricks and lets the boy Dansheng practice them.
“Unique (奇特的), funny and beautiful”— these are what the artists worked hard for at the time. They borrowed cultural elements from traditional opera and painting. The looks of many characters come from Peking Opera face makeup, showing their personalities. Lovely Dansheng looks like wawasheng, roles for kids in Peking Opera. A cunning (狡猾的) fox wears huadan makeup to make her more attractive. Huadan is the young female role in Peking Opera.
Customs like walking on stilts (踩高跷) and lion dancing are shown vividly (生动地). Animation artists painted in both realistic and poetic (诗意的) styles. Simple and thin lines are used to paint characters, while the ink wash painting style was used for mountains, trees and water.
Another animation, Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy (《小蝌蚪找妈妈》) was totally drawn with ink and brush. The designers learned from the great artist Qi Baishi. The black tadpoles, pink lotus flowers, yellow chickens and red goldfish … all come to life!
“Classic Chinese animations show us how colorful and rich our cultures are. I want to show respect to the artists who made them!” said actor Li Zonghan at a preview (提前放映) of Legend of Sealed Book.

Chinese scientists have released a new geologic map of the moon. They say it is the world’s most detailed map of the moon’s surface to date. The mapping project took more than a hundred researchers 10 years to complete.
The mapping work used data from the Chang’e missions as the main source. It also used high-quality data from international exploration programmes. China started the Chang’e programme in 2004. Since then, the country has sent various landers and rovers (探测器) to the moon in order to collect data.
The new map was drawn at a scale of 1: 2, 500, 000. On this map, we can see 12, 341 impact craters (撞击坑), 81 impact basins (撞击盆地), 17 different rock types and 14 unique types of structures. The map also shows the locations of the leading sites of the Chang’e missions.
The most detailed map provides a lot of information about the geology of the moon and its evolution. It is expected to make a great contribution to scientific research. It can also help select the landing sites on the moon for future exploration missions.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has made a number of regional maps of the moon with data from the Apollo missions. However, those maps were completed at different times with different levels of quality. So they were not able to be directly used together. The Apollo programme succeeded in preparing and landing the first humans on the moon between the years of 1968 and 1972.
“The USGS did put its regional maps together to complete a 1:5 million-scale map in 2020,” said the researchers. “That map, however, is less detailed in comparison to China’s 1: 2.5 million scale map.”

Zhurong, the name of China’s Mars rover(火星车), was announced on April 24th, 2021, China’s Space Day. The name of Zhurong comes from a character in ancient Chinese stories.
The way it was named is the same as other space programs like Chang’e, Tianwen and Beidou. In ancient Chinese stories, Zhurong is a fire god. He is a proud man dressed in the soldier’s clothes, holding a sword and riding on a large tiger. And he is famous for stopping his son from causing floods for humans successfully. Besides, according to the words’ Chinese meanings, “Zhu” means “wish”, which can be used to express the good wishes for humans’ study of the universe(宇宙). And “rong” means “integration”, which shows Chinese people would like to use the space with other countries peacefully, and to build a community with a shared future for human beings.
Zhurong, the Mars rover, is 1.85 meters high and weighs about 240 kilograms. It has six wheels and four solar panels(太阳能面板)and it can move at 200 meters an hour on the planet’s surface. Have you ever felt you were being watched? Some new technologies might make you feel that way. Digital billboards (电子屏幕) are able to recognize certain human characteristics (特征). They have cameras pointed at the people on the street, and can recognize people’s age, a man or a woman. Then a computer inside the billboard uses this information to make ads (advertisements) for the people who are looking at the billboard. For example, if a man passes a billboard showing an ad about women clothes, the computer can change the ad to something such as men’s sporting shoes, to catch the man’s attention.
Although advertisers see this as a great chance to reach their customers, some people feel that this is an invasion (侵犯) of their privacy. However, advertisers say that the billboards will not be able to recognize their face or get any personal information about them.
In fact, this kind of “personal” advertising has already appeared on the Internet. Search engines (引擎) like Google and Bing can follow what we search for. When we have searched for some products and services, companies then pay search engines to use it in ads. So if you search for travel information, you may see ads for airlines and hotels. This kind of advertising has proved to work better than traditional advertising.
In today’s world, people see thousands of ads every day, but they don’t take much notice. Advertisers are trying to change that by personalizing the experience of seeing an ad. So pay attention the next time you see a billboard—it would be talking to you.

When you feel a sneeze(喷嚏)or cough coming on, covering your mouth prevents the spread of germs(细菌). You probably knew that.
But how to cover your mouth is very important. You might use tissues(纸巾), and put your used tissues into the bin. “If you don’t have tissues, you should sneeze into your elbow, not your hand, even if you are used to doing that.” The doctors advised.
“If somebody sneezes into his hands, those germs will be passed on to other people, or other objects that people touch.” said Dr. Hill.
Germs are most commonly spread by sneezing and coughing. When they land on your hands, they are passed from hands to things like bills, door knobs(扶手), elevator buttons(电梯按钮) and other surfaces. At the same time, the people around you can touch them.
This isn’t nagging(唠叨). The Centers for Disease Control also suggest that sneezing and coughing into your elbow is necessary. Even the New York City subway officers ask the passengers to “cough or sneeze into elbow or use a tissue.”
“The suggestion was taken seriously about 10 years ago. However, most people didn’t pay much attention to it. That means the adults may have missed the advice. But children are often taught in school the right way to cough or sneeze.” Dr. Benjamin said.
To be clear, people can’t keep away from all the risks in this way, but it’s the best choice. At the same time, we’d better wear masks(口罩) and often wash our hands. “Hand washing is one of the most important things people can do to keep healthy.” Dr. Hill said.

Every kid has his or her own favorites. Dolls, dinosaurs, remote controls and cellphones—they might have a toy box with all kinds of playthings to keep them excited, but there’s a favorite they always reach for first—cars. Although the sex difference in the toy world remains, it’s not only little boys who are drawn to all things with wheels. That my 20-month-old daughter dotes on the red bus toy proves this.
From age 0 to 2, children are in the sensorimotor (感觉运动的) stage of development, explains Alyssa Wilkins. “They are learning by taking in everything through their senses — sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing,” Wilkins says. “Toys and real-life objects like cars are very sensorially engaging. Kids can interact with toy cars, trucks and so on through spinning (旋转) their wheels, watching them move in different directions, or hearing the sounds they make.”
Also, kids are just naturally drawn to loud and moving objects. “They see the lights on the cars and the rolling wheels, and hear the sound of the running engine. It’s very attractive.” Wilkins says. “Kids will always be drawn to attractive and loud things because that is what engages (吸引……的注 意) their brain and sensory systems.”
Another attraction of toy vehicles is that they’re typically small enough to fit in a child’s hand. Cars become the favorite of both boys and girls because they can put their cars in their pockets or carry them around. A car is also a cause-and-effect toy—it teaches children that their actions can make something happen. “It’s super interesting and exciting for kids to learn that they can change something in their environment and they may feel proud of what they have done.” Capanna-Hodge says.
Every child is unique in how they play with toys, and the reasons for their play style may be different and complex. Finally, how your kids play with their toy vehicles could be a little window into what controls or excites them.
