An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa got up early to read books. His grandson tried to do everything he could to imitate(模仿)his grandfather.
One day, the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read books just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I do understand as soon as I close the books. What good does reading do?” The grandfather quietly turned from putting coal(煤)in the stove and answered, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as he was told, but all the water was out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You’ll have to run a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the same took place. The old man said, “You’re just not trying hard enough. Try again.” The boy again put the basket into the river and ran very hard, but when he reached his grandfather, the basket was empty again. He said disappointedly, “See Grandpa, it’s useless!”
“So you think it useless?” The old man said. “Look at the basket.” The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been changed from a dirty old coal basket into a clean one, inside and out. “You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you’ll be changed, inside and out.”
Do you like reading? It is very important for us to learn or study through reading. But now many students say they don’t have enough time to read. So we need some skills to help read more in less time while we are doing some reading in class. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview(预读)—if your article is long as well as difficult, such as long magazine articles or science reports, previewing is very useful for you to get a general idea.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Of course you can’t get all the details by previewing. It tells you not to spend time on things you don’t really want or need to read.
Skim(浏览)—if your article is short and simple, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily paper, skimming is a good way to get a main idea. Here’s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same passage, but perhaps we’ll get the idea of what it’s all about.
I wish all of us could read more books and enjoy reading every day!
