Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF. The event takes place every year to encourage families, companies and communities to turn off a part of lights and electrics for an hour. The event will happen between 20:30 to 21:30 on the 25th of March 2023.
When did Earth Hour first start?
Earth Hour first started as a light-off event in Sydney in 2007. Earth Hour has now become a yearly event, encouraging many around the world to show how much they care about the future of our planet! This year WWF will play a video, which you can share to get more attention!
Why is Earth Hour important?
Climate change and global warming cause all wildlife to face extreme challenges, such as losing their homes and facing worse weather conditions. This could make animals and plants disappear in the world! This includes us, so we need to do our bit to protect the planet, as there’s no planet B!
What can you do to take part in Earth Hour?
In recent years, around 9 million people took part in Earth Hour in the UK! Let’s see if we can increase that number this year! There are many activities you can do:
1. Going for a nighttime walk is a great way to support your own health.
2. Take advantages of this hour by going to bed early and having a good rest.
3. Have a wonderful night by setting up a tent in the backyard.
4. Bring some light and warmth to your home with candles.

①Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. But the good news is that you’re not alone. Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy.
②What makes people shy? Scientists say such things as genes(基因), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
③What might happen if you are shy? Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
④How do people overcome shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us, “When I tried to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me.” For most people, overcoming shyness takes time and practice. Here are some tips given by scientists.
⑤Think of what to talk about before you’re in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
⑥Let people know you’re shy. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you’re shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
⑦Make things easy for the other person. Remember, you’re not the only shy person around. Doing what you think might help others feel good, for example, say hello or smile.
