Many people are waiting for the train. Some are reading the newspapers, some are making phone calls, some are watching their phones and some are saying goodbye to friends.

Mr. Wei, Mr. Liu and Mr. Cheng are talking happily, so they don’t know the train is going to leave. The guard says to them, “Hurry up! The train is going to leave.” The three men hear the guard. Two of them jump onto the train quickly before it moves. Mr. Wei is left behind. He looks very sad. The guard says to him, “Don’t feel bad. The next train will come in ten minutes.” “I know,” Mr. Wei says, “It is my train. My friends only come to say goodbye to me.”

It is Sunday today. It’s a fine day. Jim and his mother are going to the West Lake with their friends for the first time. Peter and his parents come from England. Bob and his sister come from America. They all hear the West Lake is very beautiful. It’s very famous in the world. Now they are on the dike (堤) of the lake. The water is clean. Some boats are on the lake. It’s really fantastic. The West Lake is really a good place to visit.

My name is Bob. Tomorrow is the weekend. We have no classes. My parents aren’t going to work, but we are going to be very busy tomorrow. My mother is going to buy some food. My father is going to visit my aunt and uncle. I’m going to play computer games with my cousin. Tomorrow evening we are going to have a big dinner. At night we are going to the cinema. I think we will have a nice weekend.

Jill and Kate are going hiking (徒步旅行) with their classmates tomorrow. They want to take some fruit with them. Jill likes oranges and Kate likes apples. When they get to the market, they can’t find any oranges, and the apples are too green. “What are we going to buy now?” asks Kate. “Hey, what’s that big round fruit over there?” asks Jill. “I don’t know. Let’s ask the sales-girl.”“ What do you call this?” “Youzi,” answers the girl. “Why don’t we buy one?” asks Jill. “OK. We’re going to have lots of fun in hiking and eating a new kind of fruit!” says Kate.

Like schools in China, American schools begin in September after a long summer vacation. The first term is from September to January and the second is from February to June. Usually American children begin to go to school when five years old. Most students are seventeen or eighteen years old when they finish high school.

But unlike middle school students in China, high school students in America take only four or five subjects each term. They usually go to the same classes every day and have homework for every class. After class they do all kinds of interesting things.

After high school, many students go to college. They may go to a small or a large one. The usually have to pay a lot for their higher education. So lots of students work after school to make money for their studies.

Tom and Fred are students. They are both twelve years old, and they are in the same class in their school. One day, they have a fight(打架)in class, and their teacher becomes very angry. She says to both of the boys, “ Stay here after school this afternoon, and write your names a hundred times.”

After the last lesson, all the other students go home, but Tom and Fred stay in the classroom. They begin to write their names in their exercise books and wait for their teacher.

When the teacher comes, Fred is crying. The teacher looks at him and says, “ Why are you crying?” “Because his name is Tom King, and my name is Frederick Hollingsworth,” Fred says with tears in his eyes. “ It is too bad that I have a very, very long name!”

The USA is the fourth largest country in the world. It is smaller than Russia, Canada and China. Washington, D.C. is its capital. But it is a quiet city. New York is the biggest city in America and it’s one of the biggest cities in the world. It is in the east of the USA and at the mouth of Hudson River. A large part of the city is on Manhattan Island, a big island in the river. New York has a larger population than Washington, D.C. In New York we can see the famous statue, the Statue of Liberty.
