Peter was a smart boy. He lived with his parents in a small house near some hills. The people there were all poor. One night it was very dry and windy. When everybody was asleep, Peter suddenly heard some noise. It came out from the kitchen. He got up and walked to the kitchen. He found that the wood beside the stove (火炉) was burning. There was no water tap (水龙头) in the house, so he could not put out (扑灭) the fire. He shouted loudly to wake up everyone in the house. Then he ran out of his house and knocked on the doors of many houses to wake the people up. They all left their houses quickly. At last, the fire was put out by the firemen. Many houses were burnt. But nobody was burnt in the fire.

One day a tiger caught a fox in the forest. Before the tiger could eat him up, the fox cried out, “You can't eat me. Don't you know that I’m the king of the forest? If you eat me up, all the other animals in the forest will be angry with you.”

The tiger didn't believe him. “How can such a small animal be the king of the forest?” he asked himself.

“If you don't believe me,” the fox said, “then take a walk with me in the forest. You can see for yourself whether（是否）they are afraid of me or not.”

The tiger thought it was a good idea, so they started off together. The fox walked in front and the tiger went behind. When the other animals saw the tiger coming, they ran off as fast as they could.

“See for yourself, Mr Tiger,” the fox called out quickly, “All the other animals are afraid of me.”

“Yes, yes,” the tiger said, “You are quite right.” Then he let the fox go.

Mrs. Brown had a young cat, and it was the cat’s first winter. One evening it was outside when it began to snow heavily. Mrs. Brown looked around everywhere and shouted its name, but she did not find it, so she telephoned the police and said, “I have lost a small black cat. Has anybody found one?”

“No, madam,” said the policeman at the other end, “But cats are really very strong animals. They sometimes live for days in the snow, and when it melts (融化) and somebody finds them, they are quite well.”

Mrs. Brown was happy to hear the words. She said, “Our cat is very clever. She can even talk.”

The policeman was getting rather tired. “Well then,” he said, “Why don’t you put your telephone down? Maybe she is trying to telephone you now.”

December 25th is Christmas Day. In most countries it is the most important day in the year. All the people come back home. The ringing bell tells people that Christmas comes. People sing and dance day and night. They have a good time.

Most families buy a Christmas tree for their children. And there are some presents in the tree here and there. People also put presents in children’s stockings. In many places, Father Christmas brings presents to them. He is in red clothes. There is a big bag on his back. In it there are a lot of presents.

On Christmas Day, people enjoy all kinds of food. They are really happy!

Our feelings are always changing. Sometimes we’re happy. Sometimes we’re sad. Sometimes we’re excited. Sometimes we’re worried. When we get a nice gift, we may feel happy or even excited. But when we lose it, we may feel upset. People have different feelings on one thing. For some people, they may feel sad when a game is over, but for some people, they may feel happy. People show their feelings differently. For some people, we can see their feelings from their faces or eyes, or by the tone of their voice. But for other people, we can’t find their real feelings easily. Everyone has good days and bad days. Sometimes it is helpful to share our feelings with others. Talking to other people about our feelings can help us relax and feel better.

Do you always feel tired? If so, you should have enough time to rest. If rest doesn’t work, you should go to see the doctor. Doctors will tell you something about your health. In our life, people are busy working, taking care of families and doing a lot of things. Sometimes we forget our health. We just keep working and working. But when we find we’re sick, it’s too late. We should not keep ourselves too busy every day. We should learn to balance (平衡) work and health. Work is important. Health is more important. If we lose a job, we can find another. But if we lose health, we will never get it back.

There was a poor man in a small village. He had an orange tree in his garden. On the tree, there were many fine oranges. One day he found one of his oranges was much bigger than the others. It was as big as a football. Nobody had ever seen such a big orange. The poor man took the orange to the king. The king was so happy that he gave the man a lot of money for it. When a rich man heard of it. He said to himself, “It’s only an orange. Why does the king give so much money for it? I will take my gold cup to the king. I’m sure he will give me more money.” The next day when the king received the gold cup, he said to the rich man, “What a beautiful cup! I’ll give you something wonderful. Please take this great orange.”
