My name is John Smith. I live in London. I am an engineer. I work for a telephone company. I like different food. From Monday to Friday, I work hard. I eat simply. I have a large piece of cake and a bottle of milk for my breakfast. I have a small lunch. I usually eat a small sandwich and a large bottle of juice. I have fish and chips for my supper. After supper I have a chocolate ice-cream for my dessert(餐后甜点). On Saturdays and Sundays, I go to China Town. I have a bowl of rice and some meat and vegetable. Sometimes I eat Jiaozi or dumplings. They are delicious. I like Chinese food for my Saturday and Sunday supper.

Mother’s Day

One of the best ways to celebrate Mother’s Day is to give your mum the Day off. Let her relax with the rest of the family doing all the housework. Usually, dad and the kids will let mum sleep late that morning as they go into the kitchen to prepare her favourite breakfast. Never forget to place a vase with a single flower on the table beside the food. The kids can pick up the flower from the garden or buy one from the shop. Arrange everything nicely before mum wakes up. Some families will carry the food and mum’s favourite sections from the newspaper to her bedroom so that mum can have breakfast in bed. Presents and cards from the kids can be handed to mum by themselves or just placed on the dining table.

After breakfast, go anywhere mum likes to go. Shopping, swimming or going on a picnic in the garden. Make a special Mother’s Day dinner or take mum out for a great meal in a famous restaurant she loves most.

Mark’s family went to the Transportation Museum (交通博物馆) last Sunday. They went there by bus. Mark was very excited. First they went to see the old cars. Mark sat in the driver’s seat. Next Mark went to see an old locomotive (火车头). He climbed up and stood in the train. But his sister Kathy didn’t like them. She didn’t like anything in the Transportation Museum. Finally they all left the museum and waited at the bus stop. After a few minutes a very old bus arrived. They got on the bus. The seats were broken. The bus made a lot of noise. It went very slowly. It was a terrible old bus. But Kathy liked it very much. She thought it was great. Sometimes Mark didn’t understand his little sister.

Musicians in Vienna

Vienna is a beautiful old city on the river Danube. It's the capital city of Austria and the centre of European classical music. From 1750 a lot of composers and musicians came to study and work in Vienna. The most famous family of musicians was the Strauss family.

There were two composers called Johann Strauss: a father and a son. The father, Johann Strauss the elder, wrote and played music for a classical dance—a waltz. His waltzes made his famous all over Europe.

The son, Johann Strauss the younger, was even more successful and popular than his father. He wrote more than 400 waltzes and his most famous one was the Blue Danube. He wrote it in 1867. Strauss and Mozart were two of the most important composers.

Mozart was bornin Austria in 1756. Before he was six he played not only the piano, but also the violin and the organ. His family took him around Europe and he gave concerts in many cities. He wrote his first opera at the age of 12 and hundreds of beautiful pieces of music for the classical orchestra. But he died in 1791 when he was only 35. Some people say he was the greatest European composer.

The Chicago Fire

The Chicago Fire of 1871 was the worst disaster of the 19th century.

The fire is said to have started one evening in Mrs. Oleary's barn (牲口棚) on the West Side of Chicago. Several hours after she milked her cow, it kicked over an oil lamp, and the cow started the fire. We do not know if the story is true, but we do know that the fire began in a bam on the West Side.

The fire spread quickly because of the wooden buildings, a strong wind, and a dry season. The fire lasted 27 hours and spread to all parts of the city. Other cities sent 25 fire companies to help put out the fire. Federal troops (联邦军队) were also used to help fight the fire and keep order, too. At last rain put out the fire.

There was a lot of damage. 90,000 people were left homeless, and 18,000 buildings were destroyed. Property damage (财产损失) was almost 200 million dollars. In addition, about 300 people died.

People from all over the world helped Chicago by sending food and clothing. Within a month 4,000 cottages (小屋) with two rooms had been built to house people. In a few years, Chicago was completely rebuilt.

World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Greenpeace are two famous organizations in the world. They both aim at making our planet a better place to live.

World Wildlife Fund works to protect wild animals and plants. It began in Switzerland on September 11,1961. Now, it has offices in 100 countries and nearly 5 million members all over the world. The members are from different groups, including governments, businesses, scientists and farmers. They have played an active role in saving animals and rainforests. One recent WWF project is protecting the Amazon rainforest. WWF has done plenty of research to find creative ways that meet the needs of both people and nature.

Greenpeace was set up in 1971, with an idea of working for world peace at the very beginning. Now it is active in protecting oceans, forests, and animals as well. It also calls for the use of clean energy, like wind power and solar power. Greenpeace has offices in 45 countries such as America and Canada. Its head office is in the Netherlands. Greenpeace has about 3 million members at present. Small steps lead to big changes. It encourages more and more people to take action.

Mr. Reece works on a farm. He and his wife grow a lot of plants and they have some cows. Every day they work hard from morning till night. One day, Mr. Reece says to his wife, “Let’s go to Portsmouth next Sunday. We can have a good lunch and then we can go to the cinema.” His wife is very happy when she hears this, because they always eat a lot, and she doesn’t like cooking three times a day. They go to Portsmouth by bus and walk about for an hour. At twelve o’clock, they want to have lunch. In front of one restaurant, they see a notice. It says, “Lunch: 12:30 to 2:30, 1.5pounds.” “Well, that’s good.” Mrs. Reece says, “This is the place for us.”

There are three pupils in the picture. What are they doing? They are catching insects in the park. The girl is catching a butterfly with a sweep net. The boy in blue is catching a beetle on the tree. The other boy with a cap is catching a ladybird on a stone. Now the ladybird is on the ground. It is moving towards a tree. Can it climb the tree? I don't know. Let's wait and see. Oh, it can climb. Look! It is climbing up the tree. It can jump, too. An insect usually has six legs and two pairs of wings. Catching insects is very interesting. Some insects are good. They are our friends. Some are bad insects. You can catch and kill the bad ones.

It is Saturday morning. There is no school today. Eddie, Tom and Danny are going to the park. It is very far from our school. They are going there by bus. They are going to have a picnic in the park. They have got some bread and cakes. They have got some fruit and drinks, too. Now a bus is coming. Eddie, Tom and Danny are getting on the bus and Linda is helping an old granny to get on the bus. Eddie, Tom and Danny all smile. A young man and a young lady see that. They both stand up and say to the old lady, “Have my seat, please.” How nice they are! Then Eddie, Tom and Danny begin talking and singing. Eddie, Tom and Danny are having a good time.
