Yang Weiyun,73, is from Anhui province. She had been a Chinese teacher in a primary school for 30 years and a kindergarten head (幼儿园园长) for another 20 years.
In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education through livestreaming online (在线直播). In her class, she neither sings nor dances, she also doesn’t sell products. Yang teaches pinyin, reading and writing. Her students are mostly adults.
“Many adults didn’t have the chance to go to school when they were young. They needed writing and reading abilities. And I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said. Yang’s class offers an easy and secret way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy (成人文盲). More than ten thousand people have classes online.
Yang Weiyun offered free pinyin courses for kindergarten pupils about to attend primary schools. However, she learned among her viewers there are a lot of illiterate adults (文盲成年人). Yang said she found them are not confident. They are afraid to go to new places, they couldn’t teach their children or read their boss’s instructions. So she added special content (内容) to meet their needs.
Zhang Mei is among the students who benefited from Yang’s lessons. She had never been to school. She moved to the city after she got married. She couldn’t find suitable work. She couldn’t fill in forms or read the tasks from teachers for children. She watches Yang’s lessons in her spare time. Now she can read Chinese characters and knows how to write her name. She also found a job.
Yang said that she tried her best to find out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes. Online teaching makes her feel that she is a “useful person” to the society.

Some people think that eating ultra processed foods (超加工食品) can make our lives easier. They love them so much: pizza, hot dogs, sausages, hamburgers, cookies, cakes, candies. But others people who like healthy and light food believe that these junk foods aren’t good for our health.
The key problem with these foods is that they are usually very high in sugar, salt and fat, all these may be harmful to the body and brain. Studies have found they can make us fat, increase the risk of heart problems and cancer. They may even shorten our lives.
A new study has showed eating more ultra processed foods for more than 20% of your daily calorie (卡路里), your cognitive (认知) ability will go down, including the areas of the brain—the ability to deal with the information and make decisions.
In Brazil, ultra processed foods make up 25% to 30% of total calorie intake (摄入). They have McDonald’s, Burger King and they eat a lot of chocolate and white bread.
Fifty-eight percent of the calories consumed (消耗) by United States citizens (公民), 56.8% of the calories consumed by British citizens, and forty-eight percent of the calories consumed by Canadians come from ultra processed foods.
Those in the study who ate the most ultra processed foods were “more likely to be younger, women, White, had higher education and income, and were more likely to have never smoked, and less likely to be present alcohol consumers (酒精消费者).”
People need to know they should cook more and prepare their own food from the beginning. We say we don’t have time but it really doesn’t take that much time. And it’s worth it because you will protect your heart and protect your brain from Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔兹海默症). It’s important to remember this: Stop buying ultra processed foods.
