247 graduate students of Fudan University have volunteered to teach the children in Xihaigu region(地区) of Ningxia for the past 22 years. The region used to be poor because of its terrible natural environment. “We hope to make a difference to the children’s life by sharing our knowledge in different fields,” one of the volunteers says.
The students have different abilities, so the volunteers have used different teaching methods to help them develop good study habits. “Local children never learned English before, so we started with basic knowledge like English letters and pronunciation(发音), ” says Li Lianshuo, a Fudan volunteer. The volunteers help the students remember English words, read articles and deal with their study problems.
“We visit the students’ homes in our free time. We talk with their parents so that we help them understand the importance of children’s education, because the parents didn’t care much about it years ago, ” explains Yang Chenhaotong, who was the leader of the volunteer team in 2019. According to Yang, the parents give their children a lot of support in their studies now.
The volunteers have helped the local children with their studies. They have also set up football clubs and held many ball games to make the children’s life colorful. The Fudan University has also given away more than 10 million yuan to the region to build playgrounds and other buildings over the past 22 years.
“Thanks to my volunteer teacher, my life has changed a lot. I will study hard and become an excellent person like her,” Li Sumei, a local student, says excitedly.

Nowadays heavy traffic can happen anywhere. People can get very uneasy if they are in heavy traffic. For many years people have tried to invent a car that can fly. If a person is driving a flying car, the heavy traffic would be far below him.
Many companies around the world are developing flying cars. They hope that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxis in or out of cities. These cars could save time in emergencies(突发事件) and help reach places that can’t be reached by road. They also hope to save the space on the ground.
Last September, SkyDrive, a Japanese company, showed off its new flying car SD03. With a pilot on board, the car was flown around for four minutes.
Flying cars need strong power to fly in the sky freely like the airplanes. SkyDrive designed the SD03 powered by batteries (电池). There are eight motors (发动机) lifting it straight off the ground. The design also produces less pollution.
Although the SD03’s test flight was successful, we may not see flying cars in our daily life soon. There are still many challenges in the way. Safety is a big problem. What happens when a motor fails? If a flying car is crossing a city, an accident could hurt not only the people in the car but also people on the ground. That’s why the SD03 has eight motors—some are backups (备用物).
Yet people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced lots of challenges at first, too. Over time, many of their biggest problems were solved. More flying cars will be seen in the sky. Tomohiro Fukuzawa, who leads SkyDrive, hopes that by 2050, people will have been able to fly anywhere inside of Tokyo in ten minutes or less.

Did your friends give you a nickname(绰号)? How do you feel about it? What does it mean to give someone a nickname?
A student put a note on his classmate’s back while they had a break at school one day. The note said “I’m a Pig”. He asked other classmates not to tell the boy. The other students started laughing at the boy, but wouldn’t say why.
Soon, it was time for their afternoon math class. Their teacher wrote a difficult problem on the blackboard. Only the boy with the note on his back was able to solve it.
Ignoring(忽略) the laughter, he walked to the blackboard and solved the problem. The teacher asked the class to clap(鼓掌) for him and took the note off his back. She told him, “It seems that you didn’t know about the note on your back, but you didn’t seem to care anyway.”
Then the teacher looked at the other students and said, “Let me tell you two things. First all of you will be put on notes by other people who don’t want you to be successful. All you have to do is to ignore these notes. You have to take every chance to learn, grow and improve.”
“And it seems that none of you are friends with this boy, and none of you were kind enough to tell him about the note. If that’s true, then you’d better hope that you have some good friends yourself and they will tell you if you meet this situation someday.” After hearing this, they all bowed their heads in shame.
