During the past summer vacation, a 15-year-old boy made a model plane on his own in less than a month. Then he flew it successfully, which surprised all the people around him.
The boy named Li Banghua is from Hefei, Anhui Province. He made the plane completely by himself. The plane is 0.6 meters wide, has a wingspan (翼展) of 4.4 meters and weighs about 40 kilograms. According to a local report, Li just finished his high-school entrance exam a year ago and got good grades. After the exam, he threw himself into the work of making the model plane right away.

Lantern festivals add magic to celebrations and their designs are deeply inspired (激励) by traditional culture. On Sept 24, 2023, Wan Songtao and his team organized the lantern show at the Aldrich Bay Park in Hong Kong. Later, they hurried back to their hometown of Zigong in Sichuan province, where another grand lantern show was on the way.
“The older I grow, the more I like lantern making.” the 54-year-old Wan Songtao tells China Daily. Early in the morning after landing in Zigong, Wan went to work at Chinese Lantern World, an ocean of light and color by huge lanterns in the shape of humans, flowers, animals and buildings to celebrate the traditional Chinese festivals. The show attracted (吸引) over 210,000 visitors from around China to the city, which is known for being home to one of the world’s best lantern shows.
Wan has made lanterns for over 30 years. In 2015, he was recognized as a city-level inheritor (继承人). At college, Wan studied painting, which led him to think about how to combine (结合) art with lantern design. Later in his work, he kept trying till now.
Each year, he invites a French light artist to exchange, and this year, he introduced the artist to the Chinese Lantern College. “I am excited to make it. Even though it is only a beginning, I am looking forward to seeing more breakthroughs (突破) in creative design for the lanterns,” Wan says.

World Blood Donor Day (世界献血日) is a very important holiday. And its goal (目的) is to make people know about donating blood, encourage people to donate blood, as well as thank current (现在的) and past donors. It is held every year on June 14th.
The first World Blood Donor Day began in January, 2004. People chose June 14th because it was Karl Landsteiner’s birthday. Karl Landsteiner created the ABO blood group system (系统).
World Blood Donor Day is mainly a holiday of celebration. It encourages people to donate their blood worldwide. Blood is short in nearly all countries, especially in developing countries.
According to WHO, over 90 million people donate blood every year, but there is still a shortage (短缺) around the world. If everyone donates blood, there may not be such a shortage.
While World Blood Donor Day provides a chance to call to action, blood donors are also celebrated every June 14th. Some cities host events so that patients have the chance to thank donors for saving their lives. During these events, people may also be able to donate blood through blood donating centers.
Because of World Blood Day, more and more people get to realize the importance of donating blood. Not only is this important in achieving the goal set by WHO, but it is good for people.

Henry is going through a very hard time. His wife has just passed away. He feels that life without her is hopeless. For months, Henry sits in his house, doing nothing. His family try to encourage (鼓励) him to do new things and enjoy life, but they’re not successful.
Henry’s neighbor, an old woman named Lisa, sees him from her yard one day. She has not seen him outside in days! She asks him to come closer to the fence (篱笆) next to her house.
“Hello, Henry! Just look at this fence. It is falling apart. You are a strong man. Can you help me fix this fence?” Lisa asks.
Henry is angry inside. He is the one who needs help right now. He thinks the old lady is being kind of rude (无礼的). But she is too old to fix the fence herself, so he agrees.
Henry works on the fence for days. Lisa brings him orange juice while he works. When he finishes, she thanks him. Henry smiles for the first time in months.
“What a wonderful job! Could you please paint it for me?” Lisa says to him.
Henry cannot believe she is asking for more help. Doesn’t she know how sad he is? But because he respects her, he agrees. He works hard and paints the fence in the hot sun, but Lisa’s orange juice and encouragement are helpful. As their neighbors pass by, they all tell Henry what a beautiful job he has done. Henry feels very happy.
Henry no longer feels that life is hopeless. He finally realizes that Lisa wasn’t being rude. She knows that staying busy can help us forget our sadness. He helped her, but she truly saved him.
