In most countries, people usually eat traditional food on special holidays. A special day in China is the Spring Festival. The Spring Festival is coming! It’s a time to wish your family. The Spring Festival is a traditional festival in China. The celebration usually starts on Xiaonian and lasts (持续) for fifteen days.
The Origin (由来) of the Spring Festival
It is said that a long time ago, a monster called Nian ate people on the Spring Festival Eve (除夕). But Nian was afraid of loud noises and the color red. So people set off fireworks (烟火) and put up red couplets (春联) to scare (吓走) Nian. Even today, people also have this kind of tradition. On the Spring Festival, Chinese people wish their family members and friends good health and luck for the whole year. They see the Spring Festival as a time to get together and usually celebrate it with a big family meal on the Spring Festival Eve.
Of this meal, the dumplings are necessary.
What you need: dumpling wrappers (饺子皮), vegetables, beef, salt and oil (食用油). Put beef in a bowl. Cut the vegetables into small pieces with a knife. Add the vegetables to the beef. Then add a little oil and salt and mix with chopsticks. When it is ready, put a spoon of filling (馅) in a wrapper and fold the wrapper around it. |
Cold air. Snow. Shorter days. We are in winter now.
Winter is the coldest season of the year. It comes between autumn and spring. For people who live in the northern part of the earth, it is really cold. In China, the winter months are usually November, December and January. It often snows, sometimes very hard. The land is covered with snow. The whole world becomes white. Winter isn’t always white. It can also be bright. There are a lot of winter activities. You can go outside and enjoy yourself. It’s a good idea to make a snowman with your friends. And you can go skating and skiing. If you really have to stay indoors, you can watch movies and spend time reading. You’ll also find it a lot of fun.
However, in the southern part of the earth, it is opposite! It is summer in November, December and January. The weather is very hot. People enjoy activities like swimming and surfing. Imagine when we are playing with snow, Australian kids are enjoying ice cream! And it also feels strange to have Christmas in summer!

There are 45 students in our class. I have made a survey. 36 students say they like to exercise. Most boys play basketball together twice a week. But girls think basketball is difficult for them. They would like to play volleyball together twice a week. My friend, Tony, is good at running. He runs fastest in our class. He runs for 30 minutes on the playground every evening before he goes to bed. Is it interesting? Gray is good at swimming. He goes to the swimming club three times a month in winter and three times a week in summer. So he’s pretty healthy. Some of my classmates have good eating habits. They eat both meat and vegetables. 70% of them drink milk every day. 10 students say they drink milk three or four times a week. But some students like to eat junk food, especially Sally. Many people like to travel when they have time off from school or work. They might go to their hometown to see their family, or travel somewhere far. But not everyone does this. More and more people are choosing (选择) to take a “staycation”.
A staycation is a new word for a period of time when people stay at home on vacation or take day trips from their home to local (当地的) places of interest. Some people might travel around their city, visiting local parks and museums. Others might try countryside trips and take part in local festivals. People like me love to just stay at home.
I had a staycation of my own over the summer. I slept late every day. I worked on music and played video games. I wasn’t too lonely. Because I had my cat to play with, and I got together with some of my friends around the city.
Traveling is fun, but it’s also nice to just stay at home and relax. It’s cheaper as well, since I don’t have to pay for travel. And you can choose to do whatever you like, or, if you want, just do nothing. There’s nothing wrong with that.
