In one community in Shanxi, a voluntary service team started last October nicknamed “Shared Children”, which works hard to support elderly empty nesters (空巢老人), is getting popular.
The 108 volunteers have already made a big difference within the Chaoyang community. They have paired off with 71 elderly people to learn about their daily needs and offer a helping hand.
In recent years, the community has come up with many ideas. At first, they started a project called “Knocking on the Door”, hoping that the elderly would connect the leaders often. However, the community did not have enough staff to support so many elderly people. So, the idea of “Shared Children” came out.
“The Shared Children voluntary service allows kind people to join in public activities for the elderly people in their spare time,” says Guo, adding that not only did the local people join in with great love, but many staff members from supermarkets, banks and other working units also joined in.
By March, the number of the volunteers in the team had reached 108. Their work has also included buying things, providing spiritual comfort, helping dealing with health problems and other duties.
The volunteers are not all youngsters. Fan Fawen, a retired train driver, joined to support the volunteer team last year. He often helps to repair something in elderly people’s homes and buys them fruit and vegetables, as well as carrying heavy stuff, like rice bags, upstairs.
Liu Chunyan, 41, is also among the volunteers. “Many elderly people now live alone and feel lonely, so we should be there and chat with them more often.” Liu says.
“More people are now starting to learn about the team. We believe that more people will join us in the future,” says Hao Guoying, secretary of the community’s Party branch.

Dad recently read me a speech, hoping to satisfy my endless search for answers—answers to everything. Ever since I was very young, I’ve asked countless times “What should I do?”, trying to avoid making mistakes. Maybe I feared to take my first baby step on my own I think.
During my middle school years, I changed. It was when I decided to try for the lead in Beauty and the Beast without asking Dad for advice. Never mind that I would have to memorize lines and movements, and I would take the chance that I might fail.
On the day of audition(试镜), I kept telling myself, “If you don’t think you can do it the right way, just don’t go.” My heart was pounding; my hands were shaking so badly that I wasn’t certain whether people would hear me.
But something happened. When I opened my mouth, I found the sound was loud, powerful and sweet! And I even reached the high notes that I’d never reached! It was fantastic! I was trying bravely even though I might fail. But I didn’t. That audition wasn’t the end of the trap that kept me from trying, but it was definitely an important part of the process of growing.
That day, I realized that if I want to live my life to the fullest, I have to push myself. Because my parents, friends and teachers don’t always have the answer to “What should I do?”.
Now, I do take these chances, with baby steps, every day, like voicing my opinions in class discussions, riding my horse over a three-foot jump...

Building a country is never easy. But how about making one disappear? A new report said a long time of climate(气候) change could do that. It also said Tuvalu would be the first country to be completely lost because of climate change.
Tuvalu, a Pacific island country with many small islands, is near Australia, lying in the South Hemisphere(南半球) and there are only 12,000 people in this country. Now, 40 percent of the area in its capital is underwater.
▲ . They don’t want to lose their country, so they plan to build a new one in the metaverse(元宇宙). It is a digital(数字化) country that only shows online. No matter where Tuvalu people live in the real world, they will still have their nationality(国籍) and “live” in its online country. For example, if a Tuvaluan misses the beautiful butterflies and the soft wind in their hometown, he can enter their digital country online and enjoy them.
This news made people in Tuvalu excited. But Li Zuxi, a director of the metaverse lab, said, “Though the digital country belongs to Tuvalu, it’s built on a metaverse platform(平台). Now, the metaverse is not perfect, which may bring some problems. He gave us an example. If someone from other countries enters the space of the digital country, how can the system tell if the person truly belongs to that country. In such situations, the safety of this digital country can’t be made sure of.”
However, many island countries disagree with Li Zuxi. They say that building a digital country may be new, but this is the only way for people in those island countries to be connected. Why not have a try?
Actually, whether people will build it or not, saving the real world and creating a better living environment should be paid the most attention to.

A.The government of Tuvalu hasn’t done enough to save the country |
B.Whether the country will disappear depends on how Tuvalu people protect the environment |

A.the digital country in the metaverse is perfect enough now |
B.there is a long way to go if people want to build a country in the metaverse |
C.people can’t make sure of the safety of the digital country |
D.all the island countries are building a digital country in the metaverse |

(One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, then broken. He was washed to the beach by the sea wave and soon fell asleep. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of people were around him and all of the people he saw were just the same size as mice.)
The emperor spoke in such a high voice. His followers and all the ladies wore rich and beautiful clothes. The ground where they were standing looked like gold and silver cloth.
The emperor and I communicated with each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from my languages—French, Spanish, Italian and Latin. No one could understand my words, even the emperor’s cleverest followers.
After about two hours of useless communication, the emperor, his wife and their servants decided to leave, and only six strong guards were left around me. This was to stop me from running away and later, they would think up ways to kill me.
These six guards were trying to give me some punishment. To scare them. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended(假装) to eat the sixth man. The poor man shouted terribly when he saw my knife in my hand. But I only cut the binding(捆绑物) around his hands. Then I put him on my feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground, too.
The people and soldiers were very surprised at what I did. They told the emperor about it quickly. After hearing this, the emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me to have a rest and they had to put six hundred of theirs together to make one for me. It seemed that they changed their idea of killing me.

Hey, there! Do you know which gift becomes the most popular one to be sent by Chinese? Of course, Chinese knot! With the Chinese cultural development all around the world, when Chinese people go abroad for business or study, they may choose a Chinese knot as a gift to their foreign friends, which makes it widely spread in the world.
The Chinese knot is a beautiful handmade art work that began as a traditional art in Tang and Song Dynasties, and became popular in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
It is named according to its different shapes, usages and origins (起源). The Treasure Knot, for example, is with the appearance of “Yuanbao”. The Torx Knot looks like “meihua” which is a kind of beautiful flower. The Kingdee Knot is in a shape of a golden butterfly, and can you believe, there is a knot called the Wukong Knot which comes from the Incantation of the Goden Hoop (紧箍咒) of Monkey King.
There are two main processes in making a Chinese knot, naming tying (打结) knots, and shaping. The ways of knot-tying are fixed, but the shaping skill is not always staying the same. Thus, how well a Chinese knot has been made can show the skill of a knot artist.
The Chinese knot has been served as wishes now. The materials can be cotton, nylon and so on, and many of them are red, which stands for good luck in China. Therefore, the knots are usually sent as gifts in some important Chinese traditional festivals or on someone’s big day to carry people’s best wishes to their family or friends.
