One day, Father gave James and William each five cents. Father said they could spend the money themselves.
“What will you buy with your money?” said James, as they walked to the shop.
“I want to buy some candy,” answered William. “What about you?”
“I think I will buy an orange for Mother. She is sick, and an orange will taste good.”
“Father gave me the money to spend for myself. Mother has money, and if she wants an orange, she can buy it any day,” said William.
“I know that,” said James, “but she is always doing something for us, and I want to let her see that I thank her.”
Soon they came to the shop. William spent his money buying candy but James bought a nice orange.
As soon as they got home, James gave the orange to his mother. “I bought it for you.” His mother was very excited. “Mother loves you very much, my dear boy,” Mother said with tears in eyes.
James was happy to hear that. But William stood there with his head down, and he felt sorry.
