At the Heihu Spring scenic area in Jinan, Shandong Province, tourists were shocked when they found a security guard (保安) could speak English.
The security guard is 56-year-old Zhang Shoujun. He has been working there for about a year. Every day, he would like to introduce the Heihu Spring scenic area to visitors in English and Chinese.
Zhang is from Yilan, Heilongjiang Province. He has been interested in English since he was in middle school, and he worked as a junior high school English teacher from 1987 to 1993. Now he lives and works in Jinan, Shandong.
Some people in Shandong were not surprised at all when they learned the news online, because there is a famous English Corner (角) in the Heihu Spring. It is so popular that many college students go there to practice English with foreign tourists. Sometimes even English teachers will show up to help.
For Zhang, working at the place makes it easier for him to learn English, but what has moved us is his lifelong learning spirit.
“I will continue working here and introducing this beautiful place to tourists from home and abroad. Welcome here!” said Zhang.
