Cao Maoyuan was born in a village of Neijiang, Sichuan. When he was young, he liked watching action movies, and he was pretty interested in wushu. At the age of five, Cao started to practice wushu himself.
Cao’s father is a driver. One day, when Cao was practicing wushu quietly, his father and some other drivers saw him. They said Cao was talented in wushu. Then Cao’s father decided to send him to a sports school.
At school, Cao practiced hard every day. In 2007, he planned to take part in a wushu competition. Before it started, Cao broke his head. His parents and doctor asked him to give up, but Cao said no and went to finish the competition. The 10-year-old boy finally got a gold medal (金牌).
Cao wanted to join the Chengdu FISU World University Games. In 2023, his dream came true. On July 29th, he won the Men’s Nanquan of Wushu Competition. It was the first gold medal of the Games. On July 30th, Cao won another gold medal.
“I am going to try my best to develop (发展) Chinese wushu culture. I hope to make more and more people from all over the world know about wushu,” he said.
