Next month, Julie will be 21. It will be a very special day for her because it will be her first birthday at Black Beauty Ranch(BBR). She’ll spend the day with Sunshine, her new friend, sharing delicious food and playing—or just enjoying being together.
Julie is a kind of monkey called a rhesus macaque (恒河猴). For about ten years, Julie lived in a lab. There, she was used for medical research. She was then retired to a zoo where she lived for another ten years. Earlier this year. Julie’s long-time mate (伴侣) at the zoo died. Zookeepers felt quite sorry about that and they thought Julie would be happier living with another rhesus macaque. That’s when she came to BBR—and where she met Sunshine.
“At first, we thought it would take a long time for them to be friendly to each other,” says Noelle, director of BBR. “but the meeting went very well. Within two days, the girls have become friends. We’re just excited.”
