A The Traditional Festival In China…Xiaonian
Xiaonian is Little New Year in English. It is usually in a week before the Spring Festival. From this day, we will go into the “busy year”, Little New Year is the beginning of Spring Festival. There are some customs (风俗) on Little New Year. Let’s learn about them together.
We often stick (粘贴) window flowers. The window flowers are popular in the north, because they are beautiful and hope a better (更好) life in the future. We also dean our houses and eat tanggua on Little New Year.
Little New Year has different dates and food in different places. In the north, it is the 23rd of the twelfth lunar (农历) month. In most parts of the south, it is the 24th of the twelfth lunar month. In the north people like to eat dumplings. But in the south people like to eat Spring Festival cake、zongzi and sugarcane (甘蔗).

The Spring Festival is the most important festival to the Chinese people. It’s a traditional(传统的) festival in China. It’s in January or February. Before the Spring Festival, people often clean their houses, buy new clothes, paste couplets(贴春联) and hang lanterns. During the Spring Festival, people put on their new clothes and visit their relatives(亲戚) and friends. They get together and have a special family dinner. They eat delicious dumplings. After dinner, they watch TV together. The children are very happy. They can play the fireworks(烟花) and get the lucky money(压岁钱).
